Dental Implants
What are dental implants?
Simply put, dental implants are high-tech metal (titanium) posts, which are surgically implanted into the jawbone to replace the roots of teeth that are damaged or missing. Dental Implants provide a strong foundation for a new artificial tooth (prosthetic). By providing a strong foundation for new replacement teeth, dental implants allow patients to regain their beautiful smiles with teeth that function and look like natural teeth. Dental implants are a common oral surgery procedure and serve as an innovative alternative to fixed bridges and dentures, which oftentimes can be uncomfortable. Implants will not move, slip, decay, make noise, or cause bone damage like some other treatments are prone to do.
Why Replace Missing Teeth?
At first glance, missing teeth can have a negative impact on one’s appearance and can also impact other areas of your life such as one’s ability to chew and speak properly. Most imperatively, eating is far difficult without a full set of teeth. Additionally, without all of the teeth in place to stimulate the jawbone, the jawbone will begin to atrophy, which leads to a sunken-in appearance to the entire mid-face. Generally, patients will lose about 30% of their supporting jawbone structure within the first year after tooth loss. Dental implants help safeguard and preserve your bone structure.
Please be aware after one tooth is missing, the remainder of the teeth will suffer and have to compensate for the missing tooth, and are more likely to fall out of alignment, or fall out completely as well.
Types of Dental Implants
Dr. Stanford and his team offer single-tooth replacement implants, implants to support partial prostheses (used to replace 2 or 3 teeth), and implants to support or retain complete prostheses (to replace an entire upper or lower arch).
Dental implant options include:
- Single-tooth prosthesis: A prosthetic tooth (crown) is attached to an implant to replace a missing tooth. A fixed bridge partial prosthesis utilizes 2-3 single dental implants.
- “All-on-4 implants (Teeth in a day)”: Four dental implants are used to support a full fixed bridge of 10-14 teeth.
- Implant retained denture: Complete and permanent dental prosthesis that is secured within the jaw.

“Don’t be afraid to Smile.”
For years I’d felt like a part of my body was missing — because my teeth were. My dentist told me that dental implants would make me feel and look a lot better. OK, I said. Now, I’m thrilled. I can smile, eat anything, and enjoy a good laugh with my friends.
